Delta State Launches Dual-Degree System in Colleges of Education Under Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda

In a landmark step to modernize teacher education and improve academic standards, the Delta State Government has introduced a new dual-degree programme that allows students in the state’s Colleges of Education to earn both the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and a Bachelor’s degree simultaneously.

The initiative, launched under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, marks a significant shift in Delta’s higher education system one aimed at fostering innovation, enhancing access, and eliminating the long-standing need for external university affiliations.

According to the state government, the dual-degree system is designed to make Delta’s Colleges of Education more competitive and attractive to aspiring teachers while aligning the state’s teacher training framework with global best practices. By enabling students to graduate with both qualifications, the programme will streamline academic progression and reduce duplication of learning, saving students both time and cost.

Officials said the reform reflects Governor Oborevwori’s vision of expanding educational opportunities and building a workforce equipped to meet 21st-century teaching demands. The model is also expected to improve teacher quality across public schools, boosting overall performance and literacy outcomes across Delta State.

Speaking on the reform, a senior education official noted that the simultaneous award system would “empower students with dual credentials that enhance employability, academic mobility, and professional growth.”

The policy complements ongoing investments in digital learning infrastructure, staff development, and curriculum upgrades across the state’s tertiary institutions.

With this bold innovation, Delta State positions itself as a national leader in educational reform, signaling a new era of inclusivity, academic excellence, and efficiency in teacher preparation all in line with the governor’s commitment to advancing education under the MORE Agenda’s pillars of Meaningful Development and Opportunities for All.
