Delta State Orders Motorists to Remove Illegal Govt Plates or Face Sanctions

The Delta State Government has issued a strong warning to motorists using unauthorized government number plates, ordering them to comply immediately or face penalties as outlined in the State Road Traffic Laws and Regulations.

In a Special Government Announcement released by the Ministry of Information, the Directorate of Transport raised alarm over the growing number of private vehicles—cars, buses, and trucks—illegally displaying government plate numbers.

The government stressed that it is unlawful for private vehicles to use government-issued plates and equally illegal for any vehicle to operate without a legible and properly identifiable plate number.

The Directorate has therefore instructed all motorists currently using unauthorized government plates to remove them without delay. It also directed those who have covered, hidden, or obscured their plate numbers without permission to uncover them immediately.

Vehicle owners without any plate numbers have been ordered to install properly registered and clearly visible plates on both the front and rear of their vehicles. Drivers who only display a rear number plate must also ensure a front plate is fixed, as required by traffic regulations.

To encourage compliance, the Directorate has provided a two-week grace period, effective immediately and ending November 28, 2025.

Once the grace period ends, enforcement will commence and offenders will be penalized in line with state traffic laws.
