Delta State Records 80% Success in Crackdown on Oil Theft and Vandalism

The Delta State Government has reported major gains in its efforts to tackle pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft, achieving an estimated 80 percent success rate.

The disclosure was made in Asaba by the Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Hon. (Chief) Peter Uviejitobor, who explained that the achievement followed the creation of a Special Task Force charged with safeguarding oil and gas facilities across the state in collaboration with security agencies.

According to him, though incidents of vandalism and illegal bunkering still occur, the Task Force has been able to respond quickly, preventing such cases from significantly disrupting production. These interventions, he added, have not only stabilized output but also placed Delta in a stronger position to exceed production targets set by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Uviejitobor highlighted that the Ministry also undertakes immediate inspections and assessments whenever oil spills occur in host communities. In such cases, operating companies are compelled to clean up affected areas and provide compensation to communities impacted by the spills..

He noted that these proactive steps played a major role in Delta’s recent recognition with the 2024 National Award as the Safest and Most Peaceful State for Oil and Gas Investment in Nigeria.

Reiterating the government’s commitment, Uviejitobor assured that the Ministry will continue to prioritize professionalism, transparency, and dialogue between oil companies and host communities. He stressed that the measures are fully aligned with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, particularly its focus on peace, security, and shared prosperity.

“Delta State remains committed to sustaining a peaceful and secure environment for investment, while ensuring that host communities enjoy the benefits of oil and gas operations,” the Commissioner stated.
