The Delta State Government has taken another major step in modernizing transportation management and public safety with a live demonstration of the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system at the Ministry of Transport headquarters in Asaba.
The demonstration, which took place weeks after the formal launch of the system, offered journalists and stakeholders an opportunity to observe how the technology works in real time.
The ANPR system, deployed under the supervision of the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Onoriode Agofure, is designed to automatically capture vehicle license plates, verify registration status, and detect expired vehicle documents through a centralized digital network. The system is connected to a synchronized national database that links multiple agencies, including the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue (DBIR), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and other law enforcement bodies, thereby enhancing coordination in road monitoring and compliance enforcement.
During the demonstration, officials highlighted how the technology operates through pole-mounted surveillance cameras positioned at strategic intersections and highways in Asaba and Warri, which form the pilot phase of the rollout plan. The cameras scan passing vehicles and instantly display information on compliance status. When violations are detected—such as expired insurance, license renewals, or unpaid road taxes automatic alerts are generated for appropriate follow-up action.
Beyond traffic management, the ANPR system also strengthens security surveillance, assisting in the identification and tracking of vehicles involved in high-risk criminal activities, including car theft, kidnapping, and armed robbery. By enabling real-time vehicle tracing, the technology forms an additional layer of intelligence support for security agencies working to curb organized crime and improve community safety across the state.
Hon. Agofure emphasized that the system is not intended to replace physical enforcement officers but to reduce unnecessary confrontations and bring more transparency, efficiency, and fairness into road compliance enforcement. He noted that the use of digital monitoring eliminates subjective enforcement and helps citizens understand clearly when and why penalties apply.
The initiative aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, particularly the pillars focused on modernization, improved governance systems, and enhanced public safety. As the pilot phase progresses, the State Government plans to expand the ANPR network to additional local government areas, with expectations of increased revenue efficiency, strengthened transportation discipline, and a safer motoring environment for residents and visitors.
The live demonstration has now set the stage for broader sensitization campaigns, as Delta continues its transition toward a smarter and more secure transport ecosystem.
