In a landmark move to modernise security architecture, the Delta State Government has deployed a cutting-edge Geographic Information System (GIS) for real-time crime mapping and intelligence-led policing across the state.
Speaking at the official flag-off ceremony in Asaba on Wednesday, the Director General of Security Matters, Mr. David Tonwe, described the initiative as a decisive departure from the era of reactive policing to a proactive, technology-driven security management system.
“The introduction of GIS will revolutionise how we track, analyse, and respond to criminal activities. It provides accurate geographic profiling of crime hotspots, enabling strategic deployment of personnel and resources,” Tonwe declared.
In a complementary development, the state has rolled out mobile emergency reporting applications popularly referred to as “Report a Crime” apps. The user-friendly platforms empower residents to instantly alert security agencies of suspicious activities by uploading photos, videos, and GPS-tagged locations in real time.
Mr. Tonwe emphasised that the synergy between GIS technology and the mobile reporting apps will significantly expand surveillance coverage, drastically reduce response times, and foster greater community involvement in crime prevention.
“This digital transformation will not only deter criminals through enhanced visibility but will also strengthen intelligence gathering and rebuild public trust in our law enforcement agencies,” he added.
The Director General assured residents that the new systems are fully operational across the 25 local government areas, with dedicated situation rooms monitoring reports round the clock.
Security analysts have hailed the initiative as a game-changer that positions Delta State as a pacesetter in technology-driven internal security among Nigerian states.
