Delta SUBEB Chairman Inaugurates LGAs School-Based Management Committees

The Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has inaugurated Local Education Authority School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) across all 25 Local Government Areas of the state, in a move aimed at revitalizing public primary education.

The Executive Chairman of Delta SUBEB, Hon. Samuel Mariere, performed the inauguration at the board’s headquarters in Asaba, charging members to work hand-in-hand with both state and federal authorities to restore the “glorious days” of public primary education.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Mariere underscored Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to tackling the decline in public primary schools, noting that many of today’s leaders emerged from such institutions.

“Restoring the standard of public primary education is a top priority for this administration,” he stated, adding that the last two years have recorded notable improvements in the education sector under the Governor’s leadership.

Mariere, a former legislator and Commissioner for Water Resources, expressed concern over the neglect of school facilities by some host communities despite repeated government appeals. He explained that the establishment of SBMCs is an initiative of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), adopted by Delta State to foster grassroots participation in school management.

According to him, SBMC membership is voluntary and reserved for credible community members committed to supporting the government’s educational reforms. He urged members to collaborate with the State Steering Committee and SUBEB to ensure effective implementation of policies that will enhance teaching and learning conditions.

Permanent Secretary of SUBEB, Mr. Byron Unini, and State SBMC Chairman, Mr. Sunday Okpare, also praised the initiative, pledging full commitment to its objectives.

Newly inaugurated SBMC members and local government chairmen present at the event assured that their activities would strictly follow established guidelines to ensure transparency and measurable impact.

The ceremony was attended by SUBEB management and other education stakeholders from across the state.
