The Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has restated its commitment to enhancing the quality of education and improving school infrastructure throughout the state.
This comes in response to a viral video showing pupils sitting on the floor at Eghreka Primary School in Ewu, Ughelli South Local Government Area.
Addressing the issue at a press briefing on Wednesday, at the SUBEB headquarters in Asaba, the Board’s Chairman, Hon. Samuel Oghenevwogaga Mariere, stated that the situation had been blown out of proportion and was being used for political purposes.
He stressed that the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has made notable strides in meeting the educational needs of Delta State through the implementation of the MORE Agenda.
The Chairman revealed that more than 16,000 dual desks have been distributed to schools across the state so far this year. This is in addition to contributions from other ministries, constituency projects by members of the State House of Assembly, and support from corporate organizations.
He also highlighted the construction of 234 new classrooms 162 funded through the 2024 UBE Intervention Fund and 72 completed by the state government with an additional 24 classrooms currently under construction.
The SUBEB Chairman pointed to notable improvements in school security and staff welfare, including the construction of 22 perimeter fences and gatehouses, the renovation of five existing ones, the installation of 164 VIP toilets, five solar-powered boreholes, and the building of 10 staff quarters for teachers.
During the interactive Q&A session with journalists, concerns were raised about the security of school furniture and the need to fence school premises to prevent theft and misuse by the surrounding communities.
In response, the Chairman assured that steps are being taken to strengthen security measures. He also revealed plans to construct staff quarters within school compounds to ensure better supervision and protect school property. He further noted that more than 90% of schools in Delta State are already fenced, highlighting the government’s commitment to safety and long-term sustainability in the education sector.
He further emphasized that Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda is fueling major investments in the education sector, aimed at creating safe and supportive learning environments for every child in Delta State.
In a related development, SUBEB announced that the Basic Schools Sports Festival will begin on October 9, 2025, across all 25 local government areas, with the grand finale set for October 22, 2025, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
