The Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has announced a change in both the date and venue for the grand finale of the 2025 Basic Education Schools Sports Competition, shifting the event from the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, to the Southern Delta University Stadium, Ozoro, in Isoko North Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Board’s Executive Chairman, Hon. Samuel Mariere, the new date for the finals has been set for Monday, October 27, 2025, to ensure smooth logistics and wider participation from schools across the state.
Mariere explained that the competition’s final stage will feature a full array of sporting events designed to promote talent development and healthy competition among pupils in public basic education schools.
The categories include Football, Table Tennis, Scrabble (Board Game), and Athletics, covering the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay races.
He urged all stakeholders — including Education Secretaries, Head Teachers, Sports Masters, and participating pupils — to take note of the schedule adjustment and make necessary preparations for the finals. Mariere emphasized that the competition remains a key part of SUBEB’s commitment to nurturing physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship among young learners in Delta State.
“The Board is committed to ensuring that our pupils not only excel academically but also develop physically and socially through sports,” he stated.
“This competition provides a platform for discovering and grooming young athletes who can represent Delta and Nigeria in the future.”
He commended the efforts of school administrators and sports coordinators for their continued support in advancing grassroots sports in the education sector and encouraged participating schools to intensify their training ahead of the finals.
The Basic Education Schools Sports Competition, which began with zonal preliminaries across the state’s 25 local government areas, has produced several promising talents over the years and remains a vital part of the Delta SUBEB’s strategy to integrate sports into the basic education curriculum.
