It was a solemn evening of remembrance and tribute as dignitaries, family, and friends gathered at the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew, Anglican Diocese, to honour the life of Chief Mrs. Esther Ifeyinwa Okirika (née Ojuederie).
The Service of Songs, held Wednesday, followed her passing on August 25, 2025, at the age of 75 after a long battle with illness.
Chief Mrs. Okirika was remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and community pillar whose quiet strength and kindness shaped many lives.
Her husband, High Chief Dr. Wellington O. Okirika (JP), pioneer chairman of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), described her as the anchor of his public service journey.
He recalled her unwavering support during his push for the 13 percent derivation fund for oil-producing communities, noting that her cheerfulness and wisdom kept him grounded through challenges.
Speakers at the service, including family members and friends, reflected on her compassion, generosity, and faith. Anecdotes shared painted a picture of a woman who lived a life of quiet but profound influence—supporting not just her family but also extending acts of kindness within her community.
The ceremony was marked by hymns, prayers, and testimonies that highlighted Mrs. Okirika’s enduring legacy of love, service, and integrity. Attendees agreed that her impact would continue to resonate far beyond her immediate family.
*Her funeral is scheduled for Friday, September 19, 2025, at St. James Anglican Church, Ovu Town, Ethiope East Local Government Area, followed by interment at her family compound.*
As the congregation reflected, it became clear that Chief Mrs. Esther Okirika’s legacy rests not only in memories but also in the lives uplifted by her compassion and steadfastness.
