Don’t Let Politics Divide Us, Oborevwori Urges Leaders at Nwaoboshi’s Funeral

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged political leaders across Nigeria to set aside rivalry and focus on unity, saying the country can only move forward when leaders work together.

The governor made the call on Friday at the funeral mass of former Senator Peter Nwaoboshi at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Ibusa.

Addressing mourners, Oborevwori said the late senator’s life should remind those in public office that leadership is a responsibility to serve, not an opportunity for personal ambition.

“Political power does not last forever,” the governor said. “What truly remains is the impact we make in the lives of our people.” He warned against allowing political differences to weaken national progress.

“When we allow division to take root, we slow down development. But when we cooperate across party lines and ethnic backgrounds, we build something stronger than ourselves,” he stated.

The funeral drew political figures from different parties and regions, reflecting Nwaoboshi’s influence beyond partisan boundaries.

Governor Oborevwori described the late senator as a committed representative who maintained relationships across political divides. He said Nwaoboshi’s approach to politics showed that disagreement does not have to destroy respect.

Speaking directly to the family, the governor encouraged them to take pride in the legacy he left behind, noting that his years in public service would be remembered in Delta State and beyond.

In his homily, the Vicar-General of the Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku, Very Rev. Fr. Peter Mobuogwu, focused on accountability and faith.

He reminded the congregation that life is temporary and that every individual will give account of their stewardship before God. Quoting from Scripture, he assured mourners that God remains close to the faithful, even in moments of grief.

The mass was attended by several prominent Nigerians, including former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, former Governors James Ibori and Ifeanyi Okowa, former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, and other federal and state lawmakers.

The gathering served not only as a farewell to a former lawmaker but also as a moment of reflection on leadership, responsibility, and the need for unity in Nigeria’s political space.
