Drug Abuse: DESOPADEC Brings Awareness Campaign to Jigbale Market

The Department of Community Development and Public Enlightenment (CDPE), under the Directorate of Social Services of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), on Thursday, held a sensitization campaign.

The campaign led by the Executive Director, Chief Favour Izoukumor, took place at the bustling Jigbale Market in Udu Local Government Area and focused on raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, cultism, prostitution, and other social vices.

Today’s campaign, which focused on tackling various social vices, was designed to shed light on these critical issues while also equipping traders and parents with the knowledge and tools needed to deal with everyday challenges and pressures.

During the interactive session, the resource persons, Ms. Elizabeth Odisu and Ms. Honeywell Ebirajolo, passionately discussed why people turn to illicit drugs, the devastating effects such habits have on their health and families, the warning signs parents should watch for in their children, and practical steps to help those in need of support.

Addressing the audience, Mrs. Chinenye Ezonfade, Head of the Department of Community Development and Public Enlightenment (CDPE) at DESOPADEC, highlighted the strong commitment of the Executive Governor, Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, to human capital development—one of the key pillars of his M.O.R.E Agenda.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of gifts by the Head of CDPE, Mrs. Chinenye Ezonfade, to the top four participants in a quiz competition. The winners were Mrs. Akpesiri Blessing, who took first place; Mrs. Evelyn Temile, who came second; Miss Chinenye Winifred, who placed third; and Mrs. Anthonia Esume, who took fourth position. Consolation prizes were also given to everyone who asked questions during the session.

The traders and parents expressed their heartfelt joy and appreciation for the event, praising DESOPADEC for organizing such a timely and impactful program. They also offered prayers of goodwill for both DESOPADEC and the Delta State Government.
