The Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) has intensified its environmental enforcement campaign within the capital territory, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable urban environment.
At the latest sitting of the DSCTDA Mobile Court held on Thursday, in Asaba, a total of 28 environmental defaulters were summoned for various violations, including indiscriminate refuse dumping, obstruction of drainage channels, and failure to maintain proper sanitation around their premises.
Of those summoned, nine appeared before the court, with eight found guilty and fined accordingly, while one was discharged after review.
Those convicted include landlords and occupiers of several business premises across Asaba and Okpanam, such as Unig Restaurant, Furniture Shop by GSM Fence, Welder Workshop opposite El-Veep Superstore, Laundry Shop Okpanam, Eleganzer Mall & Event Centre, and Cold Belly Food & Beverages, among others.
However, bench warrants were issued for 19 other offenders who failed to appear before the court. The absentees include operators and property owners of Evergreen Hotel, Bafua Filling Station, JB Comfort Kitchen & Bar, Rehoboth Estate, and El-Veep Superstore, among others.
Speaking after the court session, the Director-General of the Agency, Hon. Patrick Ukah, stressed that the DSCTDA remains resolute in enforcing environmental laws across the capital territory. He described the initiative as part of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to urban renewal and public health protection.
“Cleanliness and environmental orderliness are collective responsibilities. We will continue to enforce compliance to make our capital city cleaner and safer,” Ukah stated.
Also addressing the press, Mr. Isaac Nwosu, Head of Environment, said the Agency will sustain both its sensitization and enforcement exercises to ensure that residents and business owners comply fully with waste management regulations.
He urged Deltans to maintain proper waste disposal habits and avoid practices that endanger public health or obstruct drainages, noting that the Agency’s goal is to achieve a sustainable, flood-free, and environmentally responsible Delta State Capital Territory.
