The Delta State House of Assembly on Tuesday 3 February took steps towards overhauling the state’s revenue framework as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori formally requested the repeal of the Delta State Internal Revenue Service Law 2020.
In a letter read during plenary by Speaker Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, the governor urged the House to repeal the existing law and enact in its place the Delta State Internal Revenue Service and Harmonised Taxes and Levies Law, 2026.
Oborevwori explained that the proposed repeal and replacement had become imperative following the enactment of the Tax Reform Laws 2025 at the federal level. The new legislation aims to harmonise state revenue provisions with the national tax regime.
The governor stressed that consolidating the 2020 law with key elements of the 2025 federal reforms into a single statute would streamline taxation and administration.
This, he said, would foster ease of doing business, eliminate fragmented laws, and promote uniformity, clarity, and efficiency across Nigeria’s tax system.
Among other benefits highlighted were reduced multiple taxation, improved taxpayer compliance, enhanced revenue mobilisation through modern administrative practices, and increased investor confidence to support sustainable development in the state.
At the same plenary session, the governor forwarded another request seeking the Assembly’s approval for the screening and confirmation of Mr. Okoh Sebastine as Managing Director of the Delta State Structure for Signage and Advertisement Agency.
Speaker Guwor directed the nominee to forward 35 copies of his curriculum vitae to the Clerk of the House on or before February 3, 2026.
The plenary underscores Governor Oborevwori administration’s push to align Delta’s fiscal policies with evolving national frameworks while strengthening institutional appointments for effective governance.
The nominee is scheduled to appear before the lawmakers for screening on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
