The Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA) has established an ad hoc committee to investigate the recent recruitment exercise carried out by Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka.
This decision came after the Assembly received a petition from two concerned citizens representing the “Concerned Stakeholders of Delta State.” The petition alleged that the university’s Governing Council and Management disregarded the recruitment approval given by the university’s Visitor and Governor of Delta State, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
According to the petitioners, more than 400 people were employed over 300 beyond the number officially approved.
During plenary, Speaker of the House, Hon. Dennis Guwor, announced the formation of the committee, naming Deputy Speaker Hon. Arthur Akpowowo as Chairman, with the Clerk of the House, Barr. Oto Aghoghopia, appointed as Secretary.
Five additional members of the House were also named to serve on the committee.
The Speaker instructed the ad hoc committee to conduct a thorough investigation and submit its report, along with recommendations, within three weeks. While presenting the petition, the Chief Whip, Hon. Perkins Umukoro, explained that in January 2024, the Governor had approved the hiring of 100 new staff for Delta State University to fill essential manpower shortages.
The petitioners, however, claimed that the university’s Governing Council and Management ignored the Governor’s directive and went ahead to recruit over 400 people exceeding the approved number by more than 300.
They described this as a blatant disregard for the Governor’s instruction and a serious breach of due process, financial discipline, and the principles of accountability that should govern the operations of state-owned institutions.
According to them, the situation raises significant concerns around governance and ethics, which is why they are urging the Assembly to launch a full investigation.
“This petition is made in good faith and in the best interest of the people of Delta State,” the statement read. “We believe the Delta State House of Assembly, as the voice of the people and a key institution for upholding accountability, will act promptly to address this violation of executive authority and protect the integrity of governance in our state.”
