Elections Near: INEC Announces Key Dates and Prepares

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held its second quarterly consultative meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Tuesday in Abuja. The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, addressed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on a range of critical issues.

The meeting, which included the introduction of newly appointed National Commissioners and RECs, focused on preparations for upcoming elections and the Commission’s commitment to improving electoral processes.

Professor Yakubu emphasised the importance of the RECs’ roles in ensuring the success of electoral activities across the states. He highlighted the need for RECs to proactively implement policies and procedures determined by the Commission, without waiting for directives from the headquarters. He urged them to intensify efforts in areas such as voter access, voter register clean-up, stakeholder engagement, and election logistics management.

The Chairman also announced the dates for several key elections and electoral activities scheduled over the next year. These include bye-elections in 12 states on August 16, 2025, the Anambra State Governorship election on November 8, 2025, the FCT Area Council elections on February 21, 2026, and the Ekiti and Osun State Governorship elections in June and August 2026, respectively. He also mentioned the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, starting August 18 for online pre-registration and August 25 for in-person registration.
