The immediate past Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Godwin Elumelu, has begun consultations ahead of his planned bid to return to the National Assembly in the 2027 general elections.
During a meeting at the APC Secretariat, on Tuesday, in Issele-Uku with the chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Aniocha North, Mathew Chinye, and members of the party’s executive committee, Elumelu formally informed party leaders of his intention to contest the Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency seat. The gathering attracted party supporters from the ten wards in the local government area.
At the meeting, Elumelu reviewed his record during his three terms in the House of Representatives between 2007 and 2023. He highlighted projects he facilitated across the constituency, particularly in the power sector, including several electricity substations, transformers, distribution networks, and the construction of a Benin Electricity Distribution Company office in Asaba. He also cited major transmission projects aimed at improving electricity supply in the area.
Beyond power infrastructure, he noted that his tenure brought employment opportunities, the establishment of energy research centres including one at the University of Benin solar lighting projects, and several health sector interventions such as buildings at the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba and the establishment of the Federal College of Nursing Sciences in Onicha-Uku.
Elumelu also mentioned other projects including health centres, community halls, ICT centres, traditional rulers’ palaces, and housing for the State Security Service in Asaba. According to him, these projects were funded through constituency allocations and aimed at improving development across the four local government areas in the constituency.
Explaining his renewed political ambition, the former lawmaker said he decided to seek a return to the National Assembly after observing a decline in the level of representation and development initiatives in the constituency since he left office. He said his goal is to restore strong representation and attract more projects to the area.
In response, APC chairman Mathew Chinye commended Elumelu’s past contributions to the constituency and gave him the party’s support to proceed with his plans to contest the seat in 2027. The meeting concluded with goodwill messages from party members present.
