Entertainers Commit to Joining Delta State Health Insurance Scheme

The Director-General of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), Dr. Isaac Akpoveta, has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to providing affordable and accessible healthcare for all Deltans.

He noted that the scheme covers up to 80% of common illnesses like malaria, typhoid, hypertension, diabetes, and minor surgeries, with special attention to pregnant women and children under five.

Dr. Akpoveta made this statement during a courtesy visit by members of the Entertainers Movement from Oshimili North and South to the Commission’s headquarters in Asaba. He stressed that the goal of the commission is to ensure that every resident regardless of income, background, or status can access quality healthcare without facing financial strain.

He further explained that the state’s focus on social health insurance is geared toward tackling key health issues, especially those affecting vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and people living with disabilities.

“Social health insurance is designed to help everyday people deal with major health concerns like malaria, typhoid, malnutrition, childbirth, and illnesses that impact children under five and older adults who are no longer in active work,” Dr. Akpoveta said.

Dr. Akpoveta explained that individuals and groups can sign up for the health insurance scheme by providing their names, phone numbers, and a token contribution of ₦7,000 per person. Once registered, participants will receive a medical ID card within two months, giving them access to accredited hospitals nationwide. He noted that some of the enlisted hospitals include top facilities like the American Hospital and Asaba Specialist Hospital (ASH), all of which have been carefully vetted to meet medical and operational standards.

“We don’t just work with any hospital we thoroughly assess each one to ensure they meet our quality standards,” he said. “Our aim is to make sure patients get the best care from qualified professionals. Once you’re registered, your treatment begins from the date indicated on your card and lasts for a full year. We’ve already started payments to hospitals and are ready to support the poor and those in need.”

Dr. Akpoveta emphasized that the program will go a long way in easing the financial burden of healthcare and will help move the country closer to achieving universal health coverage.

Meanwhile, Frank De Don, Chief Convener of the Entertainers Movement for Oshimili North and South, along with the Association’s Chairman, Mr. Emma Onyemezien, praised the Commission for its dedication to providing quality healthcare for all Deltans.

They stated that their visit was to explore potential partnership opportunities with the Commission, with the goal of helping their members enroll and benefit from the health insurance scheme.
