Falcons Stun Morocco with Comeback Win in Mission X

The Super Falcons of Nigeria came from two goals down to beat the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco in the final of the 2024 WAFCON tournament, completing Mission X.

The Super Falcons have now won a record 10 AFCON trophies, but it did not come easy, as they had to overturn a two goal deficit to defeat Morocco 3–2 in a hard fought encounter.

The Atlas Lionesses took the lead in the 13th minute through captain Chizlane Chebbak, after Falcons midfielder Ayinde played a wayward pass directly to the Moroccan at the edge of the 18-yard box. Chebbak then hit a curler that had Nnadozie stretching but unable to reach the ball.

Again, in the 24th minute, the Atlas Lionesses extended their lead with a sublime finish when Mssoudy dribbled past Alozie to wrong foot Nnadozie, making the game look almost impossible for a comeback, especially with the way Morocco defended, leaving the Falcons with almost nothing in the attacking end.

In the second half, Nigerian coach Madugu made key changes, bringing in Babajide and Echegini in the 59th minute, and it proved to be a stroke of genius, as the momentum of the game shifted.

The Super Falcons went on to score three goals in the 64th, 71st, and 88th minute via Esther Okoronkwo, Ijamilusi, and super-sub Echegini, breaking the hearts of the Atlas Lionesses, who have now become the first team to lose in successive finals, having lost 2–0 to Banyana Banyana in the last WAFCON.

The Super Falcons will hope to build on this victory and defend their title in the 2026 WAFCON tournament which Morocco will be the host.
