Family set to bury son murdered at Ajayi Crowther University

The families of Akro in Ughelli South and Emiko Royal family of Warri Kingdom are set to bury their son, who was tragically killed at Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) in Oyo State, on May 24, 2024.

Tonia Emiko, mother of Timeyin Akro confirmed the funeral arrangement via a phone conversation with Warri Sentinel Monday.

A candlelight procession would be held on Friday, January 24, 2025, at 5:00 PM, at Deeper Life Junction Ubeji and on Saturday, January 25, the body of the late Akro would be conveyed from Safe Haven Mortuary Warri to his hometown in Gbaregolor, Ughelli South Local Government Area for interment.

Akro, a second-year student at the institution, was allegedly beaten to death by a group of students on May 24, 2024, after being accused of stealing a mobile phone.

The incident which occurred in his hostel, Shepherd Inn, on campus was condemned publicly after a disturbing video surfaced online, showing the student writhing on the ground as he was attacked with sticks by fellow students.

In response to the incident, ACU expelled the students involved and handed them over to the police.

The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan, on Friday, January 10 granted bail to the 12 individuals accused of Akro’s murder. Justice Ladiran Akintola of the Oyo State High Court set bail at ₦5 million for each suspect, “with two sureties each one of whom must be a biological parent of the applicant/defendant.”

The case has been adjourned until February 21, 2025 after the suspects pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of murder and conspiracy.
