Argentina brought Nigeria’s journey at the FIFA U-20 World Cup to an emphatic end with a dominant 4–0 win on Wednesday night in Santiago, Chile.
The six-time champions controlled the match from beginning to end, getting some payback for their exit at the hands of Nigeria at this same stage two years ago.
Alejo Sarco wasted no time, finding the net just two minutes in to set the tone. Maher Carrizo made it 2–0 in the 23rd minute with a brilliant free-kick after Nasiru Salihu committed a foul near the edge of the box.
Nigeria had trouble settling into the game and saw a penalty shout waved away after Ramirez seemed to foul Salihu in the box.
Winger Oseer Achihi showed glimpses of his talent down the left wing, delivering dangerous crosses that kept Argentina’s defense on their toes. Despite his efforts, the Flying Eagles couldn’t capitalize on the chances they created.
Just before halftime, Daniel Daga nearly pulled one back, but his well-placed shot was brilliantly stopped by goalkeeper Santino Barbi, preserving Argentina’s 2–0 lead.
Carrizo found the net again in the 53rd minute to extend the lead, and substitute Matheus Silvetti wrapped things up in the 66th with a stunning curling shot that left goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt with no chance.
Nigeria’s run came to an end in the Round of 16, a tough exit for the two-time silver medalists who had gone into the tournament with high hopes.
