Tragedy struck during a New Year’s Eve Mass in Delta State as a Catholic priest collapsed while delivering his homily and was later confirmed dead, throwing the Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku into mourning.
The priest, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Stephen Chukwuma, was presiding over the service at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Boji-Boji Agbor, in Ika South Local Government Area when the incident occurred.
Witnesses said he suddenly slumped at the altar while preaching, prompting immediate efforts by parishioners and fellow clergy to assist him. Chukwuma, aged 63, was rushed for medical attention but was pronounced dead shortly after.
The Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku announced the death in a statement issued by its Director of Communications, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Charles Uganwa. He said, “With total resignation to the will of God, the Bishop, priests, religious, and lay faithful of the Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku announce the call to glory of Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Stephen Chukwuma, which took place on Wednesday, 31st December, 2025. Until his death, he served as the Parish Priest of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Agbor, and the Regional Vicar of the Agbor Region”.
Church officials described the development as shocking, noting that the priest was actively engaged in pastoral duties at the time of his passing. Prayers were offered for the repose of his soul, while the Mass was brought to an abrupt end.
According to a report from DAILY POST, the late priest, who hailed from Akumazi-Umuocha in Ika North-East Local Government Area, was remembered by parishioners as dedicated to the service of God and the Church.
The Diocese is expected to announce funeral arrangements and further details in due course.
