Governor Oborevwori Honoured with Distinguished Governor Award, Inducted into Nigeria Order of Sports by SWAN

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has been honoured with the Distinguished Governor Award and formally inducted into the Nigeria Order of Sports by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in recognition of his administration’s remarkable contributions to sports development and athlete welfare.

The honour was conferred during SWAN’s Diamond Jubilee celebration held at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, marking 60 years of excellence in sports journalism and advocacy for sports advancement in Nigeria.

According to SWAN, Governor Oborevwori’s administration has demonstrated unmatched commitment to the growth of sports, particularly through strategic investments in infrastructure, grassroots programs, and youth empowerment initiatives. The association cited notable achievements such as the reconstruction of the Warri Township Stadium, Delta State’s consistent dominance at the National Sports Festival, and the state’s strong representation in Team Nigeria at major continental and international tournaments.
Receiving the award on behalf of the Governor, his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Fred Edoreh, expressed gratitude to SWAN for recognizing Delta’s sustained leadership role in sports development. He reaffirmed the Governor’s resolve to continue positioning Delta as Nigeria’s hub of sporting excellence through deliberate investments in athletes, facilities, and sports education.

Mr. Edoreh, who was also conferred with the SWAN Fellowship Award during the event, noted that the recognition serves as a motivation for the state government to further expand sports initiatives that nurture young talents and promote national unity.

SWAN leadership commended Delta’s model of sports administration as a template for other states, emphasizing that sustained investment in sports remains a powerful tool for youth engagement, peacebuilding, and economic empowerment across Nigeria.
