Governor Oborevwori Pitches a Budget Exceeding ₦1 Trillion for Delta State in 2026

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has announced a proposed ₦1 trillion budget for 2026, with a major focus on capital projects especially in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

Speaking through the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sonny Ekedayen, at a citizens’ engagement forum held on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, the Governor revealed that 67% of the proposed budget will go toward capital expenditure, while the remaining 33% is earmarked for recurrent spending.

He explained that the proposed allocation is aimed at investing more heavily in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other key development areas, while still meeting essential commitments like workers’ salaries and the day-to-day running of government.

Governor Oborevwori highlighted that the strong emphasis on capital projects reflects his administration’s dedication to driving growth and development. He also reaffirmed his commitment to accountability, transparency, and the responsible use of public funds.

“This gathering isn’t just a time to reflect it’s also an opportunity to share the progress we’ve made, reaffirm our commitment to transparency, and lay out our vision for the future.

“Over the past two years, we’ve worked diligently to uphold fiscal discipline and ensure transparency and accountability in how we govern.

“We’ve implemented strict financial controls, cut down on waste, and made sure that every kobo spent truly benefits our people.

“Thanks to careful financial management, we’ve significantly reduced our public debt, paving the way for more sustainable growth and development. One of our major accomplishments has been in boosting revenue generation.”

Speaking on agriculture and private sector investment, Ekedayen revealed that efforts are in progress to develop carbon markets, boost agricultural activities, and make land available to attract and support private investors.

While reviewing the 2025 budget performance, he noted that the state had done well, achieving 69% implementation of the capital budget and 86% of the recurrent budget.

“We’re optimistic that this positive trend will continue through the end of the year, as more payments are being processed and additional projects are being delivered,” he said.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, delivered a goodwill message on behalf of the College of Commissioners, expressing gratitude to Deltans for their continued support and collaboration with the state government.

He emphasized that the administration’s achievements were largely driven by the support, feedback, and trust of the people, and assured that transparency and accountability would continue to be at the heart of how projects are carried out.

Representatives from civil society groups, community leaders, and professional organizations—including Mr. Rex Anighoro, Prince Igwe, and Mr. Voke Ighorodje praised the Oborevwori administration for its policies and programs focused on the needs of the people.

They pointed out that the engagement clearly showed the government’s commitment to openness and inclusive governance. They emphasized that by actively involving stakeholders in the budgeting process, the government is helping ensure its policies and projects genuinely address the people’s real needs.
