Hull Set to Sign Ex-West Brom Defender Semi Ajayi

According to a report from Goal, Hull City is reportedly close to finalizing a deal to sign experienced Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi, who was let go by West Bromwich Albion this summer.

Ajayi’s contract at The Hawthorns ended at the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, and it was announced that he would leave the club at the end of June, joining Grady Diangana and John Swift, both of whom departed in May.

This happened after a season where West Brom finished ninth in the Championship, just four points shy of a play-off spot.

The season also saw considerable instability within the club, highlighted by the departure of manager Carlos Corberan on Christmas Eve to take over the vacant managerial position at Valencia.

The Hull Daily Mail suggests that Ajayi is “expected to be an additional signing in the near future” for the Tigers as they look to rebuild under their new manager Sergej Jakirovic.

The publication mentioned, “Defender Semi Ajayi, the 31-year-old Nigerian who left West Brom at the end of the season, is anticipated to be another signing soon.”

They report that discussions regarding personal terms between the club and the player are nearing completion for the 31-year-old, paving the way for his transfer to The MKM Stadium.

“The details of his free transfer to the MKM Stadium are thought to be close to being finalized.”

Ajayi has represented the Super Eagles 43 times and was somewhat marginalized at The Hawthorns last season, leading him to pursue a new opportunity this year.

If this transfer is confirmed, Ajayi will be joining a team that is also welcoming a new head coach.

Hull dismissed Ruben Selles in mid-May, but it wasn’t until mid-June that Jakirovic was officially announced as Selles’ successor, having been the head coach of Turkish Super Lig club Kayserispor during the second half of the 2024/25 season.
