In a decisive move to curb exploitation and ease economic pressure on traders, the Chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area, Hon. Godwin Ogorugba, has banned the collection of union fees from traders operating in the council.
Ogorugba, who made the announcement on Tuesday during a meeting with traders in Ozoro, the council’s headquarters, decried the persistent exploitation of business owners under the guise of union fees. He expressed concern over the rising cost of goods and rents, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to creating a fair and sustainable market environment
“I will not stand by and watch certain individuals make life difficult for the people of Isoko North. We will be sending an executive bill to the legislative arm that will block every form of extortion of traders. The practice of demanding payments to a union before allowing a business to operate must end. This will bring about free and fair trading,” Ogorugba stated.
As part of broader reforms, the council chairman also announced plans to revoke lock-up shop allocations in the markets to eliminate third-party interference. He stressed that market shops would now be handed directly to traders, ensuring that individuals with no legitimate business activities can no longer use political connections to secure spaces and lease them for personal gain.
Ogorugba criticized the role of multiple unions, landlords, and agents in driving up the cost of living in Ozoro, noting that their influence has made it increasingly difficult for residents to afford basic services. He assured traders that his administration remains committed to policies that promote economic fairness and sustainable development.
