Liverpool has come to a verbal agreement to acquire Bayer Leverkusen’s gifted 22-year-old midfielder Florian Wirtz for a record-setting fee of £127m, including add-ons, as reported by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.
The German international, who has settled on terms in the past few weeks, is scheduled to undergo a medical examination at Anfield, with an official announcement expected soon.
If finalized, this transfer would make Wirtz the most expensive signing in Premier League history, surpassing the fees for Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice.
Wirtz, who was Liverpool’s prime midfield target, had an impressive last season, scoring 16 goals and providing 15 assists for Leverkusen.
His astute positioning and quick decision-making placed him just behind Jeremy Doku for passes completed in the attacking third (32.4 per 90 minutes) among players across Europe’s top four leagues.

In Arne Slot’s 4-2-3-1 formation, Wirtz is anticipated to take on the role of an attacking midfielder, excelling in tight spaces behind the striker.
The Reds have been proactive this transfer window, having already secured Wirtz’s teammate Jeremie Frimpong and making progress in discussions for Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez.
With a variety of midfield options available, Slot has some intriguing choices to make in order to fit Wirtz into the lineup. Liverpool supporters can look forward to the exciting playmaker making an impact in the upcoming season.
