“My City”: Afropop artiste Supercart introduces herself to the world, talks growing up in Delta

From the vibrant streets of Jakpa, nestled within the bustling community of Uvwie in Delta State, South of Nigeria, emerges a shining music star, Favour Rukeme Akpofode, musically known as Supercart.

This afropop sensation, embodies the spirit of her neighborhood which has influenced her music positively, motivating her drive to go harder.

As with many artistes who would say they’ve been doing music right from the womb, Supercart has been on the grind for a very long time, but burst into the scene professionally in 2022.

Drawing inspiration from her surroundings, Supercart developed a musical style that is as diverse and dynamic as the streets that raised her.

What sets her apart is not just her musical talent, but her undeniable personality that shines through. With a magnetic charm and infectious energy, she effortlessly captivates audiences, leaving them spellbound with her performances and stage presence.

Entertainment Editor of YourCitiNews recently caught up with this fast rising gem from the Niger Delta, for a quick chat and here’s what she had to say about herself and her music.

E: How would you describe your sound/type of music?

S: I’ll say I’m versatile, when I’m having a positive energy and with the right producer I could do just about any kind of song. Although lately I’ve been trying to work on Afro pop, since it’s my culture because I also want to relate with my people.

E: The first thing people notice when they hang around you is your infectious personality, how would you describe yourself?

S: I am cool, relatable, principled because I’m specific about my wants, loyal, funny and stubborn as well.

E: Which artistes are your role models or inspiration in the music industry?

S: I learn from everyone, in that way I don’t think I have a specific person I want to be like.

E: Where do you draw your inspirations from when you make music?

S: The good life and motivation from everyone who’s coming from nothing (humble beginnings) trying to get a better life and live right. We must remember that it’s all a process and we must keep trusting it.

E: Where do you see yourself in the future with respect to the growth of Nigerian music right now?

S: I see the best version of myself, a global superstar traveling round the world, making good music, killing shows etc. It’s Dreams and God (DAG) and I know as long as I got God, I got all.

In November 2023, Supercart unveiled her latest musical endeavor, her EP titled ‘Rebirth‘, signaling a new chapter in her artistic journey. The 6-track body of work serves as a testament to her growth as an artiste, showcasing her evolution both lyrically and musically. Each track is a masterpiece in its own right, offering listeners a glimpse into Supercart’s world and her unique perspective on life, love, and everything in between.

Fuelled by sheer talent and unwavering determination, she took matters into her own hands, pouring her heart and soul into every aspect of the project. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that Supercart accomplished it all without the backing of a record label.

I dropped my EP ‘Rebirth‘ November 30th 2023 and I want to thank God for giving me the courage and kept me going because at a point it was all confusing because I also did a listening party all by myself without a label deal, it was only few support from family and friends who believed in me but it was more than I expected and all went successful”, she says about her project launch.

Despite the challenges she’s faced along the way, Supercart remains unstoppable, driven by her passion for music and her unwavering belief in herself. She depicts this in her first official single in 2024, titled ‘My City‘.

With each new release, she continues to defy expectations, pushing the boundaries of afropop and leaving an indelible mark on the music industry. As Supercart’s star continues to rise, one thing is clear: her journey from Jakpa to global stardom is just the beginning.

With her unique blend of talent, personality, and resilience, she is poised to become a force to be reckoned with, representing not just her neighborhood, but typifying what makes afrobeats tick!
