The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has voiced serious concern over the recent assassination attempt on one of its patrons, Chief Benard Jagboro, in Okwokoko, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NANS National Financial Secretary, Comrade Jeremiah Ohomah, praised the Nigeria Police Force for their quick and effective response, which led to the prompt tracking and arrest of the suspects behind the attack.
NANS further noted that arms and ammunition were recovered during the police operation — a clear sign of the seriousness of the crime and the high level of professionalism displayed by the security operatives.
The statement revealed that NANS had received credible information indicating that the transfer of the case and the arrested suspects—initially meant to be moved to Abuja for thorough investigation and prosecution—has been stalled due to alleged interference by an unnamed political figure who also serves as a Minister. NANS described this situation as a serious threat to justice and a dangerous precedent that could weaken the rule of law.
In response, the association’s leadership issued a stern warning against any form of political meddling aimed at protecting or supporting criminals. “We will not stand by while those in power try to obstruct justice or shield those responsible for acts of violence from facing the consequences of their actions,” the statement added.
The statement further emphasized that NANS remains fully committed to seeking justice for Chief Benard Jagboro and called for the police to be allowed to perform their constitutional duties without interference or pressure from any quarters. It warned that any effort to hinder the course of justice would be strongly resisted by the Nigerian student community.
NANS also urged the Inspector General of Police and other relevant authorities to handle the case with utmost transparency, ensuring that justice is not only served but clearly seen to be served.
