The Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, FCA, earned widespread praise for his dedication to preserving and celebrating African culture during the Iwaji (New Yam) Festival held on Saturday at Isumpe, Utagba-Uno in Ndokwa West Local Government Area.
Rear Admiral Mike Onah, OON (rtd), a respected elder statesman, commended Sir Onyeme for his steadfast support of cultural traditions, highlighting that the Deputy Governor’s attendance at the festival reflects his deep commitment to community values and heritage.
“We are truly proud of you, our son, Sir Monday Onyeme. You’re using your position to showcase our culture and uplift our people. We couldn’t be prouder,” Rear Admiral Onah remarked. He went on to say that the festival isn’t just about celebrating the harvest but also a vital reminder that Ndokwa traditions must be preserved. “Our culture must never be allowed to fade away. It warms our hearts to see that, despite your education, you stay deeply connected to your roots and have a genuine love for African culture. We will keep supporting you,” he added.
Engr. Dan Ossai, who hosted the Deputy Governor at his home during the festival, described Onyeme’s participation as outstanding. “Our Deputy Governor has always been a strong supporter of our culture. We are grateful for all he does,” he said.
The Deputy Governor was joined by a delegation that included the Senior Policy Adviser to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, Barrister Sam Osasa, Chief Festus Ochonogor, Chief Obi Nzete, Engr. Gabriel Amuchi, Hon. Azuka Azaka, Sir Christopher Osakwe, Surveyor Godday Aboh, and several other notable figures.
The Iwaji Festival offered the community a chance to celebrate the new yam harvest while also recognizing leaders like Sir Monday Onyeme, who actively promote cultural preservation. The event highlighted the significance of heritage and unity across Delta State.
