For the first time since its creation, the riverine community of Umuolu in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State now has access to electricity with the launch of a solar power system by a non governmental organisation, Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria)
The NGO says this initiative is a step to tackling energy poverty and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta. Umuolu is a riverine community along the River Niger in Ndokwa East Council Area of Delta State.
Like many communities around this area, electricity, road and other basic amenities are in short supply leaving residents with little or no alternatives.
It is not surprising to see indigenes of the rural community in a jubilant mood when a solar power system is provided for them by an NGO, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre.
The NGO believes this initiative will aid its drive to promoting sustainable development and environmental stewardship across the Niger Delta region.
The design of this mini-grid allows for a full capacity of 90 kwh, which can connect at least 262 houses, including businesses in Umuolu, with potentials for expansion based on observed increased energy consumption levels.
