Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged Nigerians to embrace unity and avoid tendencies that divide the nation, as the country marked its 65th Independence anniversary on Wednesday.
Speaking at the Cenotaph, Asaba, through his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, the governor described the day as a moment to honour the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers, reflect on the nation’s journey, and recommit to building a future of peace and prosperity.
“Unity Is Our Strength”
Oborevwori emphasized that Delta State’s strength lies in its people. He called for “independence from ethnic division, rivalry, and dependency,” encouraging hard work, innovation, and unity under the “One Delta” banner.
“Independence Day is a time to remember, reflect, and renew,” he said.
“We must renew our commitment to the values of peace, unity, and progress.”
The governor congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the milestone anniversary, praying for wisdom and strength in steering the nation toward lasting stability.
Showcasing Delta’s Progress
Oborevwori highlighted achievements under his administration’s MORE Agenda, particularly in infrastructure, health, and education. He noted ongoing road construction, bridges, flood control measures, and urban renewal projects aimed at improving connectivity and boosting economic activities.
On healthcare, he stressed that hospitals are being upgraded with modern facilities, including dialysis and CT scan machines, while free healthcare services are available for pregnant women, children under five, widows, and the elderly. In education, he pointed to investments in ICT hubs, digital training centres, and youth empowerment programmes.
Call for Collective Responsibility
While acknowledging criticism as part of democracy, the governor cautioned against divisive rhetoric, urging citizens to channel their energy into constructive engagement. He praised security agencies, traditional rulers, and community leaders for sustaining peace in the state, noting that waterways are now safer for navigation and commerce.
“Youths must use their energy for positive ventures. Elders and community leaders should preserve culture and promote peace, while the private sector must partner with government to create industries and jobs,” Oborevwori added.
Independence Celebration
The event featured an inspection of the Guard of Honour, a march past by military and paramilitary agencies, and was graced by senior government officials, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries.
