The Nigerian Army has approved the establishment of a Model Defense Comprehensive School in Delta State, designated to serve the entire South-South geo-political zone.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, made this known on Monday during a courtesy visit to the Government House, Asaba. He was represented by the Chief of Defence Administration, Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan.
Rear Admiral Akpan explained that the initiative is part of a strategic decision to site one Model Defence Comprehensive School in each of the six geo-political zones of the country. According to him, the North Central project located in Kaduna State is already nearing completion, while the South-West facility is being developed in Ondo State.
“This particular trip is to inform the Governor and the people of Delta State that we have found it worthy to choose Delta State as the location for the South-South project,” he said.
He attributed the choice of Delta to what he described as the “transformative leadership style” of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, adding that the school would be a major national project that would attract attention and development to the state.
“We thank the Governor for opening the door for this massive project that will bring the whole country to Delta. It is something that Deltans will be very proud of,” he added.
The delegation was received by the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, who represented Governor Oborevwori. He expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Army for choosing Delta State ahead of other South-South states.
“This is a big honour and as a government and as a people, we wholeheartedly welcome this development,” Onyeme said.
He assured the military authorities of the full cooperation of the state government to ensure the speedy commencement of the project.
“We are not taking this for granted. If there is any area that you want us as a government or as a people to assist you, just let us know,” he added.
The Model Defence Comprehensive School is expected to enhance educational and military training infrastructure in the region and further strengthen civil-military relations in Delta State.
