Team Nigeria’s athletics squad has entered a crucial stage of preparation for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The athletes are currently in the second week of a six-week training camp held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) organized this camp as the first of a three-phase build-up program. The squad features a mix of veteran champions and promising new talents, all working toward a successful outing at the Games.
As the camp moves into its second week, the training intensity has increased. Coaches have shifted the focus from general physical conditioning to event-specific drills. Currently, sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, and throwers are following a rigorous daily schedule.
Morning sessions are largely dedicated to building endurance and strength. Meanwhile, evening workouts focus on technical refinement and developing explosive speed. AFN Head Coach Solomon Aliyu expressed his satisfaction with the early progress. He noted that the team is staying disciplined and avoiding outside distractions.
The modern facilities at the Stephen Keshi Stadium have provided an excellent base for the contingent. Additionally, the favorable weather in Asaba has created an ideal environment for outdoor training. Beyond physical exercise, the camp management is also prioritizing nutrition, recovery protocols, and mental conditioning.
“The response from the athletes has been very encouraging,” noted one of the coaches. “These first two weeks are critical for fitness and team bonding. The athletes have shown great hunger for success.”
While many athletes are already on-site, a few invited stars have not yet arrived. Coach Aliyu clarified that these individuals are currently participating in the Niger Delta Games. Consequently, the AFN expects the camp to reach its full capacity once the regional competition concludes.
“We are expecting more athletes to join us soon,” Aliyu added. “Once the Niger Delta Games are over, we will have our full squad together for the remainder of the first phase.”
Despite the incomplete roster, the atmosphere in Asaba remains optimistic. Coach Aliyu praised the support staff and the quality of the arrangements. He highlighted that the accommodation, feeding, and training conditions are all top-notch.
For many younger athletes, the Commonwealth Games represent a major opportunity to shine on the international stage. Meanwhile, experienced competitors are aiming to improve their previous performances. With four weeks left in this initial phase, the AFN is confident that its structured strategy will lead to a strong showing for Team Nigeria.
