Day 3 of the NUJ Delta State Council Press Week in Asaba took a meaningful and health-focused direction as medical experts from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) briefed journalists on the rising risks of hypertension and diabetes.
During the session, Dr. Ossai Chukwuma Anthony, Chairman of the NMA Asaba Zone, and Dr. Adegbulu Daniel, the Zone’s Publicity Secretary, warned that hypertension, diabetes, and both high and low blood pressure should never be overlooked. They described these conditions as “silent killers” that often develop without obvious early signs, yet affect a large number of Nigerians.
The doctors advised participants to adopt healthier lifestylescutting down on salt, eating nutritious meals, exercising regularly, managing stress, avoiding excessive alcohol, and strictly following their prescribed medications. They also underscored the need for accurate diagnosis and ongoing medical monitoring.
After the enlightening talk, journalists took part in a free medical screening where their blood pressure and blood sugar levels were checked to promote early detection and preventive health practices.
The day wrapped up with a sensitization walk from the NUJ Press Centre to the Secretariat and back, aimed at boosting public awareness about the importance of routine health checks and healthy living. The NUJ Press Week continues with more informative activities in the coming days..
