No interest in remaining as Chairman of Delta Sports Commission after my tenure - Tonobok Okowa

The Chairman of Delta State Sports Commission, Chief Tonobok Okowa, on Monday, said that he has no wish for his tenure to be extended nor to be returned to office to lead the state’s sports commission.

Okowa made the clarification, after some young athletes from Delta State, appealed to Governor Oborevwori to extend his tenure, noting that this extension would allow him to continue nurturing their sporting careers, and also provide stability and guidance for their sporting aspirations.

The chairman, however stated that the call was unnecessary as he has no interest in continuing after his tenure, adding that the established process for the management and administration of the commission which he believes should be maintained.

“First of all, I have no interest in remaining as Chairman of the Commission after my tenure, whether by extension or reappointment.

“I believe I have offered my best and will do so till the end of my tenure, after which the mantle should go to another hand. People were there before I came and people are still to come after me, possibly with new ideas on how to improve on what I would have done. That is the way it goes.

“Secondly, there is a law that established the Delta State Sports Commission with definite tenure for membership of the board. It states clearly that it shall be two tenures of four years each for the office of Chairman. That is the law and I believe it should be maintained.

“Notwithstanding, I will remain a member of the Delta State sports family and will continue to support in necessary and possible ways,” concludes Okowa who doubles as President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).
