NUJ Delta Council Recognizes Leaders, Journalists for Driving Rapid Development

The Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) honored several distinguished individuals for their contributions to the state’s rapid development.

Among the awardees were Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, APC State Chairman Elder Omeni Sobotie, renowned journalist Asiwaju Shola Adebayo, Commissioner for Information Ehiedu Charles Aniagwu, Vice Chancellor of the University of Delta, Agbor, Prof. (Mrs.) Stella Chinyere Chiemeka, Olorogun Vincent Oyibode, and Hon. Dagidi Rollins Andaye, chairmen of Udu and Bomadi Local Government Councils, respectively. The awards were presented to Governor Oborevwori by NUJ National President Comrade Alhasan Yahya during the grand finale of the 2025 NUJ Press Week and Lecture Series held in Asaba.

The event, on Thursday, attracted media professionals, government officials, and other stakeholders from across the state. This year’s theme, “Tax Regimes and Exchange Rate Unification: Economic Implications and the Media’s Strategic Role,” highlighted the evolving economic landscape and the media’s role in shaping public understanding.

Delta State NUJ Council Chairman Comrade Churchill Oyowe explained that the awardees were selected based on demonstrable achievements, transparency, support for press freedom, and promotion of responsible journalism.

In a speech read on his behalf by Commissioner Aniagwu, Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude to the NUJ, noting that journalists play a critical role in holding government accountable. He said receiving the award reflects that his administration’s developmental efforts are being recognized and appreciated.

Asiwaju Shola Adebayo said the recognition would inspire him to contribute even more to the union. Similarly, Udu Local Government Council Chairman Olorogun Vincent Oyibode dedicated his award to the youth of Udu, praising their commitment to peace and rejecting cultism, and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to collaborating with journalists to promote accountability and community growth.

Bomadi Local Government Council Chairman Hon. Dagidi Rollins Andaye also dedicated his award to his constituents, stating it would motivate him to sustain and expand ongoing development projects in the area.

The 2025 Press Week featured lectures on Nigeria’s changing economic environment, the effects of tax reforms and exchange rate unification on citizens and businesses, and the critical role of the media in fostering public understanding. The ceremony concluded with calls for stronger collaboration between government institutions and journalists to advance transparency and development across Delta State.
