Warri South Local Government Council kicked off the 2026 Delta State Councillors’ Solidarity Cup in dominant fashion on Tuesday March 10, securing a massive 6-0 victory over their Warri South-West counterparts.
The opening fixture, held at the Nana Model College football pitch in Warri, turned into a clinical display of finishing led by Emmanuel Nunu and Jolomi Ojighoro.
The scoring began early when Felix Ojulu found the back of the net to put Warri South ahead. Following the opener, Emmanuel Nunu took control of the match scoring two quick-fire goals in the 19th and 21st minutes. Nunu returned in the second half to complete his hat-trick cementing his status as the standout performer of the afternoon.
Adding to the tally, Jolomi Ojighoro netted a brace ensuring a comfortable margin for the Warri South side and leaving the Warri South-West defense with no answers.
The match drew an ecstatic crowd of spectators who filled the sidelines to witness the local derby. The event was also a significant gathering of political figures, featuring prominent leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from both Warri South and Warri South-West.
In a show of regional solidarity, councillors from across the Delta South, Delta Central, and Delta North Senatorial Districts were also in attendance to support the tournament’s debut.
While the attackers grabbed the headlines with six goals, the defensive effort did not go unnoticed. Warri South’s first-choice goalkeeper, Agbateyiniro Isaac was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match. For his disciplined performance and for keeping a clean sheet Isaac was rewarded with a cash gift.
The Solidarity Cup aims to foster unity and healthy competition among local government representatives across Delta State. With such a high-scoring start, football enthusiasts are looking forward to a highly competitive tournament in the weeks ahead.
