Oborevwori Calls for Fair Taxation, Accurate Reporting as Nigeria Implements Economic Reforms

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has urged both government institutions and media professionals to strengthen public trust through equitable taxation and responsible communication as the country navigates sweeping economic reforms.

Speaking at the Delta State Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Week in Asaba—represented by Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu—the governor stressed that a transparent and coherent tax framework is essential for Nigeria’s long-term growth. He cautioned that inconsistent tax systems discourage investment and diminish public confidence in governance.

Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to expand the state’s tax base, plug revenue leakages, and ensure that public funds are channeled into developmental projects with maximum transparency.

He also addressed the federal government’s exchange-rate unification policy, describing it as a difficult but necessary step that has improved investor sentiment and stabilized financial indicators despite short-term economic strain on households and businesses.

The governor noted that the ongoing reforms influence commodity pricing, wage structures, and the viability of small enterprises.

He added that Delta State is deploying social programs, infrastructure expansion initiatives, and support for local industries to help citizens and entrepreneurs absorb the impact of the transition.

Oborevwori called on journalists to play a stabilizing role by providing factual, contextual reporting that informs rather than inflames public discourse. He warned that sensationalism or misinformation could deepen national anxiety and compromise social cohesion, urging media practitioners to uphold professionalism.

Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, represented by Uzuazo Ikelegbe, echoed confidence in the reforms, describing them as essential to national economic recovery.

NUJ Chairman Churchill Oyowe emphasized that the media must interpret government policies in ways that enlighten and empower the public.
