In a move set to strengthen healthcare delivery in Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has formalized an agreement with the Federal Government for the transfer of the General Hospital, Ovwian, to the newly created Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Udu Local Government Area.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed at the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja on Monday, with the Governor represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu.
The landmark decision is expected to expand access to advanced medical services for residents of Udu and neighbouring communities while deepening collaboration between state and federal health institutions.
According to officials, the transfer underscores Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to his M.O.R.E Agenda, particularly in improving healthcare infrastructure, enhancing access to quality services, and ensuring that Deltans benefit from sustained federal support.
The SSG described the agreement as a forward-looking initiative that will bring better equipment, specialist care, and improved facilities to the people.
“This handover represents a significant step towards positioning Ovwian as a major healthcare hub not just for Delta State, but for surrounding regions,” Emu noted.
The event was attended by key dignitaries, including Delta State Attorney-General, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole (SAN); the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako; senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Health; and the medical directors of FMC Ovwian and FMC Asaba.
With this transfer, the Federal Government will assume responsibility for the hospital’s operations, staffing, and development, ensuring it meets the standards of a Federal Medical Centre.
Observers believe the integration will ease pressure on existing FMCs, boost patient care delivery, and ultimately provide a stronger healthcare network for the state.
