Oborevwori Flags Off Official Groundbreaking Ceremony of  Warri–Sapele–Benin Dual Carriageway Project

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructural renewal and sustainable development with the official groundbreaking of the ₦35 billion Warri–Sapele–Benin Dual Carriageway Reconstruction Project in Delta State.

The ceremony, held on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, drew a large crowd of residents, political leaders, traditional rulers, and project stakeholders who gathered to witness what has been described as a transformative milestone under the Governor’s MORE Agenda, particularly its first pillar — Meaningful Development.

Speaking during the event, Governor Oborevwori said the reconstruction of the 60-kilometre highway represents more than just roadwork but a strategic investment in Delta’s economic future. “This project will enhance mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and strengthen inter-state trade between Delta and Edo. It is a testament to our resolve to deliver quality infrastructure that improves lives and boosts economic productivity,” the Governor stated.

The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) was awarded the contract for the 12-month project, which will feature:

8.8 metres of expanded reinforced concrete pavement

2.8 metres of reinforced shoulders

12 kilometres of stormwater concrete drains on both sides

Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the choice of reinforced concrete pavement was deliberate to ensure long-lasting durability, given the heavy vehicular traffic along the corridor.

The Warri–Sapele–Benin road serves as a vital link between Delta’s oil-rich Warri metropolis and Benin City, Edo State, facilitating the movement of goods and people across one of southern Nigeria’s busiest economic routes.

The project, he noted, aligns with the Federal Government’s broader efforts to upgrade regional highways as part of the country’s economic diversification drive.

“This initiative is not just about building roads; it’s about building the Delta of our dreams — one that is connected, inclusive, and primed for growth,” the Governor added.

The event also featured heavy machinery mobilization, site mapping, and ceremonial earth-turning, symbolizing the start of construction.

Local community leaders hailed the project as a long-awaited intervention that will transform trade, improve access, and reduce accidents along the route.

With several other infrastructure projects ongoing in Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Areas, the Oborevwori administration continues to demonstrate its resolve to deliver Meaningful Development, one project at a time.
