Oborevwori Intensifies Power Investment to Drive Delta’s Industrial Growth

The administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is intentionally steering Delta State toward faster industrial development by consistently investing in power generation, taking advantage of the recent constitutional amendment that gives states greater authority over electricity.

This was revealed by the State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, during a visit by the State Economic Management Team to Sapele Power Plc in Ogorode, Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area.

According to him, the governor’s decision to boost the state’s energy capacity is part of a well-defined plan to promote industrialisation, attract investment, and create jobs in line with the MORE Agenda. He explained that the administration recently assessed turbines and other equipment previously acquired but left unused for years in Oghareki, Ethiope West Local Government Area.

He noted that the project is not only increasing electricity supply but also creating employment and encouraging technology transfer, as local engineers and technicians are actively involved in fabrication and installation.

The Commissioner for Energy, Engr. Michael Anoka, described the progress as remarkable, praising Governor Oborevwori’s strong commitment to meeting the energy demands of residents. He expressed optimism that the expanded power capacity would significantly ease supply challenges and stimulate industrial growth.

Leading the delegation, the Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor, Dr. Barry Gbe, characterised the investment as strategic and forward-looking under the new electricity law, which allows states to play a more active role in power generation and distribution.

He revealed that the state has set up a committee, in collaboration with consultants, to liberalise the electricity market, attract more participants into generation, distribution, and metering, and ensure affordable power for both businesses and households.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Delta State Investment Development Agency (DIDA), Chief Lucky Oghene-Omoru, said the initiative has transformed a previously idle asset into a productive investment for the state. He also commended Sapele Power Plc for promoting indigenous technology, reducing costs, and generating employment.

In his remarks, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Sapele Power Plc, Mr. Valentine Ashinze, praised Governor Oborevwori’s vision and pledged the company’s support for the administration’s goal of industrialising Delta State.

Overall, the visit by the State Economic Management Team underscored the administration’s coordinated approach to development aligning infrastructure, energy expansion, and investment promotion to position Delta State as a centre for sustainable industrial growth.
