Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Monday, inaugurated the State Widows Welfare Scheme at the Dome Event Centre, Asaba, pledging continued support for vulnerable groups under his administration’s MORE Agenda.
The governor announced that 10,000 widows drawn from the state’s 270 federal wards will benefit from the initiative. Each beneficiary, he disclosed, will receive monthly stipends, beginning with three months’ arrears to be paid directly into their bank accounts.
In addition to financial support, Oborevwori directed that all listed beneficiaries be enrolled in the Delta State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme to guarantee free medical care at healthcare facilities within their communities.
The governor assured that the selection of participants was carried out through a fair and credible process, stressing that the programme is apolitical and solely focused on improving the welfare of widows across the state.
According to Oborevwori, the scheme is part of broader social intervention efforts designed to cushion economic hardship, uplift disadvantaged groups, and entrench inclusive governance in Delta State.
Since taking office, Oborevwori’s administration has supported more than 266,000 people through a range of programmes aimed at women, youth, and entrepreneurs. With the recent launch of the Widows Welfare Scheme, Delta State is once again leading the way in people-focused governance, setting a strong example of inclusive and compassionate leadership in Nigeria.
Some of the beneficiaries, like Christiana Akaluzia, Elizabeth Mukoro, and Mercy Ololo, thanked the Governor for not just offering financial support, but also ensuring they have access to free healthcare right in their communities.
