Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, reiterated his administration’s determination to permanently end flooding in the Asaba metropolis during an inspection of the ongoing six-kilometre storm drainage project.
The massive project, which channels floodwater from the busy ShopRite–Inter-Bau–Summit Road axis into the Amilimocha River, is one of the major flood control interventions under the Oborevwori administration’s MORE Agenda.
Speaking after the inspection on Monday, Governor Oborevwori explained that the 2.4m by 2.4m reinforced concrete drain, spanning 1,443 metres on both sides, represents the final phase of a comprehensive flood management system within the Asaba Capital Territory.
He commended the project contractors, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), for the quality of work so far, revealing that the project is already 40 percent funded and on track for completion before the end of the year.
According to him, the completion of the storm drain will bring lasting relief to residents and businesses in flood-prone areas such as ShopRite, Inter-Bau, Summit Road, and adjoining streets, where severe flooding has disrupted movement and economic activities in previous years.
“Once this project is completed, flooding around these areas will be a thing of the past. This is a permanent solution, not a temporary fix,” the Governor assured.
He further disclosed that asphalt works and road reinstatement will commence in the first quarter of next year, emphasizing that the project aligns with his administration’s goal of building sustainable urban infrastructure.
Governor Oborevwori expressed satisfaction that residents have already begun noticing improvements as water now flows more freely through the channels, significantly reducing the impact of rainfall.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining infrastructure investments that improve lives and enhance the aesthetics of Delta’s capital city.
