Oborevwori Tells Leaders To Put Nation Above Self

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Friday called on political leaders across the country to embrace unity and set aside bitterness and rivalry, stressing that Nigeria’s progress can only be achieved through cooperation, mutual respect, and a shared sense of responsibility.

He made the appeal during the Funeral Mass of Senator Peter Nwaoboshi at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Ibusa, where prominent Nigerians from various political, ethnic, and religious backgrounds gathered to pay their last respects.

Governor Oborevwori reflected on the life and passing of the late senator, describing public office as a sacred trust given by both God and the people for the service of the common good. He said Nwaoboshi’s journey should remind leaders at every level of the importance of selfless service and accountability.

According to the governor, national development can only flourish in an environment of peace and purposeful collaboration. He assured the people of Delta State that his administration remains focused on inclusive growth, responsible leadership, and policies aimed at improving lives.

Oborevwori also noted that life and death ultimately rest in God’s hands, emphasizing that true greatness is not determined by how long one lives, but by the impact one makes. “What matters most is not how long we live, but how well we serve humanity and our nation,” he said.

He added that the gathering was not only to mourn a respected son of Delta State, but also to reflect on the kind of nation Nigerians are building. The governor said Senator Nwaoboshi’s life stands as a reminder to prioritize service over self, unity over division, and national interest over personal ambition.

Quoting John 11:25 — “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he may die, yet shall he live” — Oborevwori spoke about the Christian hope of eternal life and urged Nigerians to draw strength from their faith, especially during moments of collective reflection.

He described the late senator as a patriot and bridge-builder whose influence went beyond party lines and contributed meaningfully to Nigeria’s democratic development.

In his homily, the Vicar-General of the Catholic Diocese of Issele-Uku, Very Rev. Fr. Peter Mobuogwu, spoke on themes of hope, responsibility, and divine justice. Drawing parallels with the Israelites’ experience in exile, he encouraged the faithful to trust in God’s presence even in uncertain times.

The Funeral Mass attracted a distinguished audience, reflecting the late senator’s national stature. Among those in attendance were the Governor’s wife, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori; Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme; former Senate President Senator Ahmad Lawan; former Governors James Ibori and Ifeanyi Okowa; former Deputy Senate President Senator Ovie Omo-Agege; former Deputy Governor Deacon Kingsley Otuaro; as well as several federal and state lawmakers.
