In a bid to reform and reposition its workforce for better service delivery and stronger public trust, the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DESTMA) has held a two-day in-house training for officers from its Special Intelligence and Provost Units.
The programme focused on improving discipline, ethics, and professionalism within the agency.
Speaking at the opening of the training, the Director-General of DESTMA, Hon. Benjamin Okiemute, said the initiative was aimed at ensuring that officers not only enforce traffic laws but also uphold integrity and moral responsibility in their day-to-day duties.
He emphasized that true enforcement begins with self-discipline, adding that the agency must “lead by example” if it hopes to earn the confidence and respect of road users.
Okiemute noted that Delta State has become the first in Nigeria to train traffic officers under the direct provisions of its enabling law a milestone he said reflects the state government’s commitment to building a credible, law-based traffic management system that promotes order, safety, and respect for citizens’ rights.
He praised the participants for their dedication and urged them to put their new knowledge to use in improving public service delivery. According to him, DESTMA’s long-term goal is to reduce road crashes and traffic violations through a mix of public education, strict enforcement, and collaboration with motorists and transport stakeholders.
Reiterating the agency’s commitment to continuous capacity building, Okiemute said DESTMA will continue to strengthen its partnership with security agencies and transport unions to ensure safer and more efficient road management across the state.
One of the participants, who preferred to remain anonymous, commended the leadership of the agency for taking internal discipline seriously, describing the training as “a bold and visionary step towards reforming public service from within.”
The two-day training covered topics such as ethical conduct and discipline, conflict management, and self-accountability, equipping officers with the skills needed to perform their duties more professionally and improve public perception of DESTMA.
