The Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has restated its dedication to promoting inclusive growth in oil-producing communities, following a visit by leaders from Owevwe and nearby communities in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
The Executive Director of Projects, Olorogun Dr. Ebenezer Okorodudu, welcomed members of the Owevwe Community Development Committee at DESOPADEC’s headquarters in Warri.
Representing seven communities—Owevwe, Saniko, Gana, Agbaide, Ughere, Otokutu, and Opherin—the committee submitted a letter outlining their demands, particularly calling for fair access to the 13% oil derivation fund.
In response, Okorodudu assured them that DESOPADEC remains open to dialogue and is committed to addressing community concerns. He promised to present their requests to the Commission’s management and board, emphasizing the agency’s goal of ensuring that all communities are included in its development plans.
Speaking on behalf of the communities, their legal adviser, Hon. Roland Ufuoma Oyibo Esq, highlighted several pressing needs. These include job opportunities for local residents, construction of the Owevwe Market, rehabilitation of the Owevwe road, building a corps members’ lodge at Owevwe Secondary School, installation of solar streetlights in Saniko, and improved drainage systems in Gana and other areas.
The visiting communities commended DESOPADEC’s leadership and expressed hope that ongoing engagement would lead to tangible development. The meeting concluded with the official presentation of the demand letter by the Community Development Chairman, Mr. Ibebe O. Mathew.
