The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, is preparing for an important election as Okakuro Akpokona Omafuaire enters the race for the chairmanship position.
In his manifesto released on Friday, Omafuaire pledged to focus on improving journalists’ welfare while promoting transparency and accountability within the union.
The NUJ has long faced challenges including unpaid salaries, poor pay, lack of health and life insurance, harassment, and job insecurity. Omafuaire said he plans to tackle these problems through several initiatives, such as establishing a Journalists’ Emergency Welfare Fund, setting up a rapid legal response team, and organizing safety training programmes for members.
“I am running for the chairmanship because the NUJ must return to its core responsibility protecting the welfare and rights of journalists,” he said.
He added that if elected, the union would prioritize members’ welfare, uphold transparency, and speak out against injustice affecting journalists.
His manifesto also highlights plans to strengthen unity among journalists, organize capacity-building workshops, provide support for freelance and independent reporters, and activate a rapid legal response system for members who are detained or harassed.
Many observers believe Omafuaire’s candidacy could help revive the union and refocus it on its fundamental mission of protecting journalists.
