Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, on Sunday joined thousands of worshippers at the Anglican Diocese of Ughelli 2026 Prayer Convocation, where he called for leadership anchored on service, accountability, and compassion for ordinary Nigerians.
Speaking during the prayer gathering, Obi appealed for divine guidance for those in positions of authority, urging leaders to place education, poverty alleviation, and responsible management of public funds at the centre of governance. He noted that many of the nation’s lingering social and economic challenges are tied to poor leadership choices and misplaced priorities.
Obi also stressed the importance of collective prayers for national renewal, especially as Nigeria gradually moves toward another election season. He encouraged citizens to remain hopeful while demanding higher standards from those entrusted with public responsibility.
The former governor received a warm reception from attendees, with cheers and chants reflecting his sustained popularity at the grassroots level. Online reactions following the event were similarly positive, with supporters praising his message and presence at the convocation.
Political observers view Obi’s appearance in Ughelli as part of a broader pattern of engagement across different regions of the country ahead of the 2027 general elections. His growing visibility in the South-South is seen as a strategic effort to expand his support base beyond the Southeast.
Organisers of the convocation described the event as a solemn moment of prayer and reflection for the nation, emphasizing the need for moral leadership and unity in public life.
Although Obi did not make any direct political declarations, his remarks on ethical governance, education, and poverty reduction aligned closely with themes he has consistently championed in his public engagements.
