Inspector Ifechukwude Patrick Enweazu, a police officer stationed at the Area Command in Ogwashi-Uku, has been granted bail by Zone 5 Headquarters. His release follows his arrest and questioning over allegations that he threatened the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku and interfered in the enforcement of a land case backed by a court order.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 5, which covers Edo and Delta States, ordered Enweazu’s arrest last week after several allegations surfaced. He was accused of overstepping his authority, disregarding a High Court ruling, and putting public safety at risk.
In a formal petition to the police, the Obi’s legal team accused Inspector Enweazu of encouraging locals to resist the enforcement of a court ruling on land ownership. They claim he sent threatening voice messages and used thugs to intimidate palace staff and court officials. The court had recognized the Obi as the rightful trustee of lands in the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom and issued a certificate of possession granting him ownership of all land behind the Delta State Polytechnic.
One of the most serious parts of the case is the statement from Inspector Enweazu’s own younger brother, who is currently being prosecuted for illegal firearms possession. In an earlier report to Delta State Police, he told investigators that his brother, while in uniform, led him and a group of armed men to the disputed land. He also admitted to selling large portions of land in the court-designated area—worth over seventy million Naira—and claimed the proceeds were funneled through an associate, Barrister Francis Okolie.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, Inspector Enweazu was granted bail on the orders of the AIG, who gave him a one-week deadline to meet with the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku and seek a peaceful resolution. According to officials, the next steps—whether disciplinary or criminal—will depend on the outcome of that meeting. Confidential police sources also told our reporter that the police headquarters in Abuja is monitoring the case closely, especially since the enforcement of the court ruling was personally approved by the Inspector General of Police.
The case has reignited discussions around accountability in the Nigerian Police Force, with growing calls for tighter oversight of officers who abuse their power and put public safety at risk for personal or political gain.
The palace Secretary Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, confirmed that the Police Inspector was present yesterday 08/09/2025 at the Zonal Headquarters in Benin but refused to give additional details on the outcome of the interaction and arrests. He noted that while the monarch remains committed to peace, the safety of court officers and respect for the judiciary and court judgments must not be compromised.
