According to recent reports, it claimed that Nigeria is poised to host the King’s Baton Relay as part of the official countdown to the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with an event planned for July 1–2, 2025, in Abuja.
However, the report has made known that in a significant international event, the Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will receive the Commonwealth Sport King’s Baton in a formal presentation, as a delegation from Buckingham Palace arrives in the country.
It will be good to point out that the King’s Baton Relay represents a unifying tradition of the Commonwealth Games, embodying peace, collaboration, and shared values among nations.

In 2025, the Commonwealth Sport movement will be collaborating with the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) and Nigeria’s National Sports Commission (NSC) to promote an important cause through the “Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign.”
This initiative unites athletes, youth, and communities throughout the Commonwealth to tackle the global issue of plastic pollution.
The campaign aims to stop one million pieces of plastic from entering Commonwealth waters. Through sports and social initiatives, it seeks to foster enduring behavioural change, inspire innovative waste management solutions, and enhance awareness regarding ocean conservation.
